A guide to workmanship

Making a leather bag or accessory can involve different techniques depending on the model and the workshop that produces it. This page describes some common stages of leather-goods production for information purposes and does not attribute the same process to every item in the catalogue.

Common stages

1. Design and cutting

The model is defined in terms of shape and measurements; the leather, lining and reinforcements are then cut according to the required components.

2. Assembly and stitching

The components are joined, reinforced and stitched. Techniques, tools and times may vary according to the structure of the product and the type of finish.

3. Finishing

Edges, closures, metal fittings and details are completed according to the design. The leather’s appearance, feel and behaviour also depend on the tanning and treatments it has received.
